NCAA Division III Programs in Tennessee

D3 Basketball Programs in Tennessee

Tennessee’s NCAA Division III basketball programs compete primarily across the USA South Athletic Conference and the Southern Athletic Association (SAA). Tennessee D3 members include Covenant College (Georgia border), Fisk University, Maryville College, Milligan University, Rhodes College, Sewanee: The University of the South, and Tennessee Wesleyan University. Rhodes College in Memphis and Sewanee carry particular academic prestige within the D3 landscape, with both consistently ranking among the top liberal arts colleges in the South.

Division III programs cannot award athletic scholarships under NCAA rules. All financial aid is merit- and need-based, administered through academic offices. For Tennessee student-athletes with strong academic profiles, programs like Rhodes and Sewanee offer a genuine combination of competitive D3 basketball and nationally recognized undergraduate education. The campus environments — Rhodes in urban Memphis, Sewanee on the Cumberland Plateau — are distinctive and should be evaluated in person before committing.

Tennessee’s D3 pool is meaningful in size and quality within the context of southeastern basketball. FCP recruits evaluating this level in Tennessee should focus on academic program alignment, coaching relationships, and campus culture. Rhodes, Sewanee, and Maryville in particular offer environments where student-athletes take both the classroom and the court seriously, and the USA South and SAA provide genuine competitive schedules with D3 tournament access.
