D3 Basketball Programs in Virginia

Virginia is home to one of the strongest collections of NCAA Division III basketball programs in the South, anchored by the Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC). ODAC members include Bridgewater College, Eastern Mennonite University, Guilford College (North Carolina), Hampden-Sydney College, Hollins University, Lynchburg University, Marymount University, Roanoke College, Shenandoah University, Virginia Wesleyan University, and Washington and Lee University. The ODAC is a competitive, well-established D3 conference with a strong tradition in men’s basketball, and Washington and Lee carries particular academic prestige as one of the top liberal arts universities in the country.

Division III programs cannot award athletic scholarships under NCAA rules. All financial aid is merit- and need-based, administered through academic offices. Virginia’s ODAC institutions are predominantly private liberal arts colleges with small campus environments, strong academic programs, and high graduation rates. For Virginia student-athletes with the right academic profile and preference for a tight-knit campus community, ODAC programs offer a genuinely distinctive college experience.

The ODAC is a serious D3 basketball conference, and Virginia’s programs within it compete with consistent quality. FCP recruits evaluating Virginia D3 should prioritize campus culture fit, academic program alignment, and coaching relationships. Washington and Lee, Roanoke, and Lynchburg have strong basketball identities within the conference, and the Shenandoah Valley and Piedmont settings of most ODAC campuses offer distinctive environments for recruits who want small-college life in a scenic part of the country.
