About Coffeyville Community College Basketball

Coffeyville Community College offers a direct path to your next opportunity—whether that's a four- year program or professional basketball. Coach Jay Herkelman runs a Kansas Jayhawk Community College Conference program built on player development and measurable progress. At the NJCAA level, you get significant playing time to build your resume, develop skills in a competitive setting, and position yourself for transfer options to Division I, II, or III programs. The practical advantage is clear: a junior college route lets you prove yourself on film, earn credits that transfer, and strengthen your academic standing while competing regularly. Coffeyville doesn't oversell—it delivers reps, coaching, and the kind of development that translates to real opportunities. You'll play meaningful minutes, work with coaching that focuses on your growth, and be part of a conference that scouts recognize. Parents appreciate the value proposition too. You're getting an accredited degree path, structured athletics, and a realistic development environment without inflated promises. Coach Herkelman's program emphasizes fundamentals and basketball IQ, preparing players for the next level whether that's a four-year school or beyond. If your goal is to play, improve, and keep your options open, Coffeyville gives you the platform to do it. Every serious recruiting conversation starts with preparation. Florida Coastal Prep—located in Fort Walton Beach, FL—trains post-grad and high school players to compete at the college level and attract the right attention. Getting recruited at this level requires more than raw talent — coaches need to see your film at the right moment, your eligibility paperwork must be in order, and your tournament exposure has to match the standard the program is recruiting to.

How JUCO Basketball Recruiting Works

Junior college coaches recruit differently than NCAA Division I staffs. Walk-on tryouts are common, signing windows extend later into the spring, and roster turnover is higher — meaning open spots exist year-round. Most NJCAA programs recruit locally first, but players who demonstrate film improvement and consistent development get evaluated regardless of geography.

NJCAA eligibility runs through the Eligibility Center but uses a separate certification process from the NCAA. There is no sliding scale — you need a high school diploma or GED, and 48 semester hours of transfer credit satisfies most transfer requirements to four-year programs. Academic eligibility requirements are generally more flexible than NCAA standards.

If you are building toward a four-year transfer, treat your JUCO year as a proving ground, not a fallback. Coaches at D1, D2, and NAIA programs actively watch JUCO film. Players who earn significant minutes in competitive NJCAA regions get evaluated.
