About Oakland Community College Basketball

Oakland Community College demands versatile guards and forwards who can operate in a tempo-driven system. Head Coach Antoine Joubert builds lineups that thrive on ball movement and defensive pressure—expect half-court execution paired with aggressive transition play. The program operates in the Michigan Community College Athletic Association, a competitive NJCAA circuit where consistency and mid-range efficiency separate tournament teams from the rest. Joubert values players who understand spacing, can handle multiple positions defensively, and contribute on the glass. This isn't a high-volume scorer's paradise; it's a program that rewards floor generals and complementary wings who embrace role clarity. The typical roster features junior college veterans alongside high school graduates learning the college game at the right pace. Playing time flows to those who master fundamentals: tight ball handling, backdoor reads, and help-side positioning. If you're a point guard or wing evaluating NJCAA options, Oakland provides legitimate exposure and development under coaching that emphasizes floor IQ over athleticism alone. The conference schedule tests you weekly; tournament seeding matters. Players who thrive here move to four-year programs with proven habits. Every serious recruiting conversation starts with preparation. Florida Coastal Prep—located in Fort Walton Beach, FL—trains post-grad and high school players to compete at the college level and attract the right attention. Getting recruited at this level requires more than raw talent — coaches need to see your film at the right moment, your eligibility paperwork must be in order, and your tournament exposure has to match the standard the program is recruiting to.

How JUCO Basketball Recruiting Works

Junior college coaches recruit differently than NCAA Division I staffs. Walk-on tryouts are common, signing windows extend later into the spring, and roster turnover is higher — meaning open spots exist year-round. Most NJCAA programs recruit locally first, but players who demonstrate film improvement and consistent development get evaluated regardless of geography.

NJCAA eligibility runs through the Eligibility Center but uses a separate certification process from the NCAA. There is no sliding scale — you need a high school diploma or GED, and 48 semester hours of transfer credit satisfies most transfer requirements to four-year programs. Academic eligibility requirements are generally more flexible than NCAA standards.

If you are building toward a four-year transfer, treat your JUCO year as a proving ground, not a fallback. Coaches at D1, D2, and NAIA programs actively watch JUCO film. Players who earn significant minutes in competitive NJCAA regions get evaluated.
