About Richard Bland College Basketball

Richard Bland College basketball is built on relationships. Head coach Andrew Lacey creates an environment where players aren't just roster names—they're part of a connected community where their development matters on and off the court. In the Virginia JUCO Athletic Conference, the Statesmen compete in a competitive junior college landscape that demands toughness and accountability, but what sets this program apart is the personal investment coaches make in each player's journey. At a junior college, size means proximity. Your coach knows your family. He understands your academic path and your basketball goals. That accessibility creates a culture where feedback is immediate, support is genuine, and progress feels earned rather than distant. Players here develop under a coach who views the program as a stepping stone to four-year opportunities, mentoring student- athletes through the critical transition years. The Virginia JUCO Athletic Conference provides legitimate competition that prepares players for Division I, II, or III basketball. Whether you're chasing a scholarship to a four-year program or solidifying your game before the next level, Richard Bland offers the structure and coaching attention that fuels growth. This is basketball where you belong to something, where your coach invests in who you become. If you're serious about competing at this level, the preparation has to match the ambition. Florida Coastal Prep in Fort Walton Beach, FL works with post-grad and high school athletes to build the skills that college coaches recruit. See what's possible at floridacoastalprep.com.

Getting recruited at this level requires more than raw talent — coaches need to see your film at the right moment, your eligibility paperwork must be in order, and your tournament exposure has to match the standard the program is recruiting to.

How JUCO Basketball Recruiting Works

Junior college coaches recruit differently than NCAA Division I staffs. Walk-on tryouts are common, signing windows extend later into the spring, and roster turnover is higher — meaning open spots exist year-round. Most NJCAA programs recruit locally first, but players who demonstrate film improvement and consistent development get evaluated regardless of geography.

NJCAA eligibility runs through the Eligibility Center but uses a separate certification process from the NCAA. There is no sliding scale — you need a high school diploma or GED, and 48 semester hours of transfer credit satisfies most transfer requirements to four-year programs. Academic eligibility requirements are generally more flexible than NCAA standards.

If you are building toward a four-year transfer, treat your JUCO year as a proving ground, not a fallback. Coaches at D1, D2, and NAIA programs actively watch JUCO film. Players who earn significant minutes in competitive NJCAA regions get evaluated.

Using a Post-Grad Year to Reach JUCO Programs

JUCO programs like Richard Bland College offer a proven pathway to four-year basketball. FCP's post-graduate basketball program helps players build the film, grades, and exposure that NJCAA coaches need to see before offering roster spots. Many FCP alumni have gone on to compete at the JUCO level and transfer to NCAA programs.
