About Wilberforce University Basketball

Wilberforce operates in the NAIA tier, which means the competition level and recruiting landscape differ significantly from Division I. This is a program where you'll get genuine playing time as a freshman if you're ready, and where development happens through repetition and coaching rather than blue-chip recruiting classes. Head coach Mark Mitchell builds rosters that value consistency and effort—players who buy in to the system and compete night to night typically see the floor. The HBCU Athletic Conference offers a solid mid-major experience. You'll travel regionally, face disciplined opponents, and play in front of crowds that care. The academic side at Wilberforce is real; the university won't sacrifice your education for basketball, which matters for the majority of players who won't go pro. This level suits players who have game but didn't land the high-major offers, post-grads looking to prove themselves, or athletes committed to playing college ball while earning a legitimate degree. You won't get NBA-level coaching or facilities, but you will get playing time, a structured program, and a chance to impact winning. Before you reach out to a program at this level, make sure your game is where it needs to be. Florida Coastal Prep exists to help serious players close that gap— through elite training, academic support, and real exposure. Start at floridacoastalprep.com or /contact/.

Getting recruited at this level requires more than raw talent — coaches need to see your film at the right moment, your eligibility paperwork must be in order, and your tournament exposure has to match the standard the program is recruiting to.
