Every serious basketball player knows that summer is when the real work happens. While the season tests your game, the offseason builds it. That is why choosing the right summer basketball camp matters so much — and why training under someone who has played at the highest level can change the trajectory of a young player’s career.
At Florida Coastal Prep, our summer basketball camps offer something most programs simply cannot: daily instruction from NBA veteran Kenny Anderson, one of the most skilled point guards to ever play the game.
Who Is Kenny Anderson?
Kenny Anderson’s basketball story is the stuff of legend. After a dominant career at Georgia Tech, he was selected by the New Jersey Nets as the second overall pick in the 1991 NBA Draft. Over 14 seasons in the NBA, Anderson suited up for the Nets, the Boston Celtics, the Charlotte Hornets, the Portland Trail Blazers, and several other franchises. He was known for his court vision, his ability to break down defenses off the dribble, and his fearless playmaking in clutch moments.
Now, Anderson brings that same intensity and basketball IQ to his coaching role at Florida Coastal Prep. He works directly with players in our post-grad and high school programs — and during the summer, he is front and center at our camps, running drills, breaking down film, and sharing the lessons that only come from competing against the best players on the planet.
What Players Learn at FCP Summer Camps
Our summer camps are not your typical week of scrimmages and free throw contests. They are built around real player development — the kind of work that translates directly to high school varsity rosters, AAU circuits, and college recruiting showcases.
Here is what a typical camp session covers:
Ball handling and footwork. Anderson is relentless about fundamentals. Players work on change-of-pace dribbling, hesitation moves, and creating separation — the same skills that made him an elite NBA point guard.
Shooting mechanics and shot selection. Every player wants to score more, but the best scorers know when and where to shoot. Camp sessions include catch-and-shoot drills, pull-up jumpers, and floater work in the lane.
Basketball IQ and decision-making. This is where Anderson’s experience really shines. He teaches players how to read defenses, when to push tempo, and how to make the right play instead of the highlight play.
Competitive scrimmages with coaching feedback. Every scrimmage is a teaching opportunity. Coaches stop play to correct positioning, talk through defensive rotations, and reinforce what was covered in drills.
Mental toughness and leadership. Anderson speaks candidly about the mental side of the game — handling pressure, staying disciplined, and carrying yourself like a professional. These conversations stick with players long after camp ends.
Who Are the Camps For?
FCP summer camps are designed for serious players — athletes who want to compete at the next level and are willing to put in the work to get there. Most of our campers fall into a few categories:
High school players looking to sharpen their skills before the upcoming season. Rising juniors and seniors who want college exposure and need to elevate their game. Players considering a post-grad year who want to experience what FCP’s program is like before committing. Middle school players with varsity-level talent who are ready for advanced instruction.
Whether a player is trying to earn a starting spot on their high school team or preparing for the recruiting process, our camps provide the environment and coaching to help them take the next step.
Why Fort Walton Beach?
Florida Coastal Prep is located in Fort Walton Beach on Florida’s Emerald Coast. The area offers a focused training environment away from the distractions of a big city, while still being close enough to major metropolitan areas for easy travel. Players get to train hard during the day and enjoy the Gulf Coast lifestyle in the evenings.
For families exploring prep schools in Florida, a summer camp visit is one of the best ways to experience the FCP culture firsthand.
More Than Just a Camp
For many players, summer camp at FCP is the first step toward something bigger. Our post-grad basketball program gives athletes an additional year of development after high school — a year to improve their skills, boost their academics, and gain the exposure needed to land a college roster spot. If you want to understand why post-grad is becoming the smartest path for college-bound basketball players, spending a week at FCP during the summer is the perfect introduction.
