Anderson arrived at Georgia Tech from Queens, New York as the nation’s top point guard recruit. As a freshman in 1989–90, he teamed with Dennis Scott and Brian Oliver — the trio nicknamed “Lethal Weapon 3” — to win the ACC Tournament and reach the Final Four under head coach Bobby Cremins, falling to eventual champion UNLV. Anderson was named National Freshman of the Year.
He left Georgia Tech early for the NBA, where the New Jersey Nets took him second overall in 1991. Over 14 seasons and 858 games with nine franchises — the Nets, Charlotte Hornets, Portland Trail Blazers, Boston Celtics, Seattle SuperSonics, New Orleans Hornets, LA Clippers, Atlanta Hawks, and Indiana Pacers — Anderson averaged 12.6 points, 6.1 assists, and 3.1 rebounds per game, and was selected to the 1994 NBA All-Star Game.
After retiring from the NBA, Anderson moved to the bench, taking over as head coach at Fisk University in 2018. Over six seasons he built the program from the ground up, guiding the Bulldogs to their best season in his final year before stepping down in 2024.
