About the American Athletic Conference (AAC)

The American Athletic Conference (AAC) is a 14-team D1 league that bridges the gap between mid-major and Power 6 basketball. Programs like Memphis, Houston, UCF, Cincinnati, Tulsa, USF, Tulane, Wichita State, East Carolina, SMU, UAB, UTSA, Temple, and Navy compete on a national stage with regular ESPN and CBS Sports Network coverage. The conference typically earns 3–5 NCAA Tournament bids annually, with strong programs like Memphis and Houston frequently in the national conversation. The AAC has produced NBA players including James Wiseman and Damion Lee.

What AAC Coaches Look for in Recruits

AAC programs actively recruit prep school and post-graduate athletes, particularly for positions where they need immediate impact. Coaches want athletic wings and guards who can create off the dribble and defend in isolation. The conference's pace-and-space style rewards perimeter shooting — players who shoot 35%+ from three with clean form are high-value targets. AAC assistants attend prep school showcases, JUCO tournaments, and live evaluation events regularly. Academic eligibility and NCAA clearance are non-negotiable — programs avoid NCAA violations closely.

Scholarship Structure and Roster Sizes

AAC programs operate on full D1 scholarship equivalency (13 scholarships), with most programs rostering 13–16 players. Full cost-of-attendance scholarships are common. JUCO and transfer portal additions fill roughly 25–35% of roster spots. Programs like Memphis recruit heavily from the Southeast, which overlaps directly with FCP's player base.

How FCP Prepares Players for the AAC

FCP's Director of Recruiting Rico Overall earned his analytics experience at UCF — an AAC member — and maintains active knowledge of what AAC staffs want. The Emerald Coast location puts FCP players 3–4 hours from USF and UCF recruiting territory. FCP's post-grad program provides a full year of high-level competition film, academic eligibility management, and direct coach exposure through showcases and unofficial visits. Contact the FCP staff to discuss how the post-grad year can position you for an AAC offer.
