About the SEC
The Southeastern Conference is a 16-team powerhouse spanning the South and Midwest, with programs like Kentucky, Tennessee, Auburn, Arkansas, Alabama, Florida, Georgia, and Mississippi State consistently among the nation's elite. The SEC is one of the deepest conferences in college basketball — in strong years, 10 or more teams receive NCAA Tournament invitations. ESPN and SEC Network broadcast games nationally, and NBA scouts attend conference games in numbers rivaled only by the ACC and Big Ten.
What SEC Coaches Look for in Recruits
SEC programs recruit McDonald's All-Americans and five-star prospects at the top end, but mid-tier programs actively seek overlooked athletes with elite athleticism and coachability. The conference runs physical, high-tempo basketball — coaches prioritize athletes who rebound and defend first. Guards need to handle defensive pressure and shoot off movement. Bigs must be mobile enough to guard in space. Verified performance in competitive environments (live tournaments, prep school schedules) carries more weight than a high school ranking alone.
Scholarship Structure and Roster Sizes
All SEC basketball programs operate on full D1 scholarship equivalency — 13 scholarships per roster covering full cost of attendance. SEC schools typically run 13–15 scholarship players with a 3–5 walk-on reserve. Transfers from JUCO, mid-major D1, and prep programs are common roster additions at programs outside the top tier.
How FCP Prepares Players for the SEC
Florida Coastal Prep is geographically positioned in the SEC's recruiting footprint — Fort Walton Beach sits 3 hours from Florida, 4 from Alabama, and 5 from Tennessee. That proximity matters: SEC assistants travel through the Florida Panhandle region regularly. FCP's post-grad program gives borderline SEC prospects a documented year of high-level competition, improved measurables, and a clean eligibility profile. Coaches Lee DeForest and Vando Becheli have placed players throughout the Southeast, including Sean East at the University of Missouri. Talk to an FCP coach about building your SEC offer.
