How Student Athletes Can Balance Film Study and Schoolwork

Film study isn’t optional at Florida Coastal Prep. Neither is the classroom. Our players want to get better on tape, but the school day doesn’t get shorter to make room for it. That’s the whole problem: two non-negotiables, competing for the same hours.

The fix isn’t more hours. It’s a fixed slot. At FCP the whole day runs on blocks: classes in the morning, practice in the afternoon, strength and conditioning in the evening, and mandatory study hall from 7:30 to 9:30, supervised by academic staff. Nothing competes for the same hours because everything has its own window.

Film gets the same treatment. Every game and workout is recorded, and players break down film with coaches instead of guessing alone. Twenty minutes of focused clips beats an hour of distracted scrolling.

A few rules that work for our guys:

  • One film session, one focus. Pick a single thing to look for (footwork, spacing, a specific matchup) instead of watching the whole game loosely.
  • Do the harder homework first, while you’re sharp, and save film for when you want to watch anyway.
  • Treat the film slot like a class period. Same time, same place, no exceptions.

Balance isn’t about doing more. It’s about protecting both non-negotiables with a schedule that doesn’t leave either one to chance. See how this fits into a full post-grad year at FCP.
